Dr. Jolie Bookspan Earns Humanitarian Prize

Jolie Bookspan, M.Ed, PhD, FAWM
I was honored to learn that for my work in world health, I have been awarded The Humanitarian Award.

It will be presented this November in Pittsburgh.

As a vegetarian, I have often heard the joke, "If a vegetarian eats vegetables, what does a humanitarian eat?" I will now be able to officially find out and let you know.

Come see my work on my website, www.DrBookspan.com.

Dr. Bookspan Inducted to Hall of Honor - National Organization of Underwater Instructors, NAUI

Jolie Bookspan, M.Ed, PhD, FAWM
It was my honor to be notified recently that I was inducted into the Hall of Honor of the largest non-profit scuba diver training organization in the world.

The award is for my work as a scuba instructor, teaching divers and diving leaders, as a diving and hyperbaric medical researcher finding safer diving practices, advising committees determining policies, running hyperbaric medical conferences, writing diving textbooks, and other contributions.

The National Association of Underwater Instructors (NAUI) trains recreational and technical scuba divers from novice through instructor. Their motto is Safety Through Education.

This year, two people were inducted. I was honored along with my old friend and colleague Henry Veix, former physical education director at West Point Military Academy.

My colleague Peter Oliver accepted the NAUI Hall of Honor award in my name and expressed my thanks.

Thank You Grand Rounds Holiday for Including Our Academy's Awards

Jolie Bookspan, M.Ed, PhD, FAWM
Thank you to the blog Florencedotcom for hosting grand rounds this week and including Academy Awards - Academy of Functional Exercise Medicine Awards Leading World Health 2009 among votes for the week's best medical writing.

This week's Grand Rounds theme was to reduce key healthcare topics to a word. Articles were listed about medicine that is timely, patient centered, or efficient. Academy of Functional Exercise Medicine Awards give Appreciation and encouragement for real world health. Check it here and add what you would like to achieve for next year.

On the web, Grand Rounds is a collection of the best on-line medical posts from the past week. A different host works hard each week to find and list the articles. This is different from the Grand Rounds in a hospital, which is a lecture for doctors about a patient or topic. Thank you to this week's host for doing the hard work of collecting and featuring our work.

Academy Awards - Academy of Functional Exercise Medicine Awards Leading World Health 2009

Jolie Bookspan, M.Ed, PhD, FAWM

It is an honor to announce the 2009 award winners of the Academy of Functional Exercise Medicine, AFEM. I am director of the Academy, and work (unpaid) for it to be an international resource for people and communities to learn to be healthy in body and actions. Award winners were selected for representing and carrying out true world health.

This year is the first year that we will award honorees. The design for the award is by Alessandro Schiavone, Creative Director from Ravenna, Italy.

The Academy is the certification teaching branch of my sports medicine practice. My practice and the academy teach individuals and groups healthy biomechanics and movement habits for daily life instead of injury-producing habits, good food instead of disease-causing food, healthier training for athletes, healthier medical practices for the sick, no cost preventive medicine, "green" fitness, and healthier mindset.

Leading World Health 2009 - Youth Award Winners

The Youth Leading World Health award this year is shared by 16 year old Babar Ali of west Bengal India and William Kamkwamba of Malawi:
Babar Ali teaches hundreds of students in his family's backyard, where he runs classes for poor children from his village who cannot afford to go to school.
news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/south_asia/8299780.stm

William Kamkwamba built a windmill from junkyard parts to bring power to his village, continuing work to provide for all Malawians, where only 2% have electricity. He left school at 14 because his family could not afford the $80-a-year tuition. He went to the library: "I was very interested when I saw the windmill could make electricity and pump water. I thought: 'That could be a defence against hunger. Maybe I should build one." He built a turbine from spare bicycle parts, a tractor fan blade and an old shock absorber, and fashioned blades from plastic pipes, flattened by being held over a fire. "I want to help my country and apply the knowledge I've learned," he says. "I feel there's lots of work to be done."

Everyone - "There's lots of work to be done"
Enjoy the beauty and health you can bring.

Voting Is This Week - Healthline for Webby Award

Jolie Bookspan, M.Ed, PhD, FAWM
Healthline has been nominated for Best Health Website for 2008. The "Webby" Awards are called the "Oscars of the Internet." Readers decide winners through on-line voting. Voting is only open until the end of April. Healthline has asked us (the Health Expert columnists) to mention it. Here is what and how:

To win the People's Voice Webby, cast your vote for your favorite health site (hopefully Healthline):
  1. Go to People's Voice Webby Awards http://peoplesvoice.webbyawards.com/
  2. You need to register. Registration is free.
  3. Once logged in as a registered member, choose Healthline from the drop down menu "Select a nominee" at the top right hand side of the page.

Voting is only open until the end of April. Vote now while you are thinking about it.

Webby Award winners will be announced May 6, 2008, and honored at The 12th Annual Webby Awards in New York City on June 10th.

According to Wikipedia, the Webbys are famous for limiting recipients to five word speeches. In 2006 Cute Overload said, "Not bad for posting kittens" and TripAdvisor said, "Because some hotels really suck." At the 2007 awards, David Bowie's speech was, "I only get five words?

What should be ours?

The Webby Award nomination and voting is for all of Healthline, not just the Fitness Fixer.
