Instead of junk candy, what about:
- Give "Pledge to be Drug Free" stickers. If you don't have preprinted stickers, easily make some with blank stickers or labels, colored markers, and help of children (yours or neighbors).
- Give small toys, available inexpensively in bulk. One choice is small blocks of modeling clay with a list of suggestions what kids can make - sculpt your dream profession, favorite person, flower... Toy, office, and hobby stores sell pre-packaged boxes of small cans of clay at economical prices. (Use some to make your high tech balance trainer.).
- If you don't distribute treats this year (or any year) put a sign on your gate or door to Trick or Treaters with a healthy message - "Be drug free," "Always say 'please and thank you,'" "Please look both ways before you cross the street," or other good message.
If nothing else, not giving junk candy may cut down on visitors to your house :-)
(Photo for this post is on the way as soon as we figure out the problem with uploads. Brain exercise.)
If you are dressed as something scary, show kids that even scary things act well and do good. Try healthy Halloween games to teach manners, such as, "You've Been Boo'd" with a good deed. In this game, you say something nice to someone or let someone in line ahead of you, tell them they have been "boo'd" and they are next to pass it on.
More Healthy Halloween choices:
- Exercise Common Sense Discipline - Turn Down Halloween Junk Food
- Is Your Health Food Unhealthful
- Mischief is Not Good Exercise - Halloween Ahimsa
- Happy Birthday Happy Halloween

Hi Jodi -I am so happy to find that you are doing well. We have met before in Philly and I attended your classes. ( The Indian guy from NJ - who sprained his back muscle twice.) . I am your avid fan.
I was wondering if you would comment on the following injury I have. There is a spot on the side of my thigh that hurts ( just below the waist) and goes down to the knee. I suspect it is the IT band. Can you comment on the causes and prevention of injurty to the IT band in one of your blogs. . Sorry for using the comment section as it seems very difficult to reach you given the hundreds of questions that you receive every week.

Hello Mr. Jayakrishnan, happy to see your note here on Fitness Fixer. You did so well in the class you took with me in 2005. I have enjoyed your e-mails of your successes since then. Haven't heard from you this year.
For something nice for the IT, see how you like
- Great Hip, Side, Leg, and I.T. Stretch
- and Better Posterior Hip, Iliotibial, and Piriform Stretch.
- Stretching the front of the hip with Quick Relaxing Hip Stretch can also help.
I think you have the book Healthy Martial Arts? There are two effective moves to relieve hip tightness on pages 70 and 71. I remember you liked these very much when you tried them in the class.
You applied everything so well to fix your serious back injury years ago, and move and live in healthier ways. The hip will be the same. See if you are standing and moving keeping the front of the hip bent forward at the top of the leg, making it tight. See if you are walking with feet turned out, which shortens the IT band. Keeping feet and knees facing forward, rather than out will also prevent tightening the bottom of the foot. You can prevent foot pain from starting next.
Enjoy, and I will check in with you over e-mail too.
