Medicines prescribed for poor mood and the surprising number of diseases caused by sedentary lifestyle, frequently cause disease and despondency. Real life movement throughout the day has been found more effective than pills and surgery to reduce or solve depression, obesity, heart disease, high blood pressure, reduce risk and effects of cancer, and other diseases.
Remember to enjoy moving. Go dancing. Skating. Play ball and Frisbee. Do community work. Pick up litter. Help a shut in. Fun doesn't only mean being entertained. Make doing good for yourself and community a positive fun feeling.
What projects can you think of to make real life active, healthy, and fun again, not just artificial movements in a gym? My Academy- the Academy of Functional Exercise Medicine (AFEM) teaches people and communities healthier ways to live - both in formal classes and grassroots community projects - click AFEM.

Dear Dr Jolie
I did smile when I read your suggestion to go dancing. A few weeks ago, I suggested via e-mail to my American daughterinlaw that she dance around the house to her favourite music as a form of exercise. When we spoke by telephone this past weekend, she told me that she is enjoying the dancing, the added bonus being she has lost 7lbs.
During the winter months when the weather prevents me from walking, I do just this plus, dare I say it, I sing. The problem being, I can't sing. No matter, at least I am having fun.

Yoga Stretches--Hi Dr. Bookspan, I just received your books and also just purchased a yoga dvd to help with my back. Are Yoga forward bending stretches while standing or sitting bad or are those bends coming from the hip? If you have done any articles or blog posts on this already, please let me know how to find those. Thank you. --Joe

To Joe, Good work getting the books and thinking about this. You didn't say which books, but each explains why various things are healthy or not so you can understand and choose for yourself, rather memorize rules and exercises. For the articles you ask, check:
- Sitting Badly Isn't Magically Healthy by Calling It a Hamstring Stretch
- Getting the Right Yoga Medicine
and
- Healthier Hamstring Stretching.
Ivy, Great work, both of you. Thank you also for your update e-mails telling me how she continues to lose weight and be happier moving more. Keep singing!
